Beach or Bush. #LifeThisWeek 37/52. 2017.109.
People talk of, and actually do in some cases, making ‘sea-changes’ and ‘tree-changes’ in life.
In our case we moved away from the hustle, bustle and mortgage-laden house in Sydney’s north-western suburbs to retire closer to the east coast. We both came from coastal upbringings as kids and teens and then our careers took us to the NSW countryside…the Bush as it is affectionately known. When we moved TO Sydney in 1978 it was to be closer to medical services, buy a house, settle into new roles at schools in the area and to be somewhat closer to family and, as it turned out, to have a second child.
The reasons to STAY there after almost 30 years dissipated so it was time for us. In renting on the NSW Central Coast – it’s a large regional area about 1.5 hours from the heart of Sydney – we have found the northern end where we are now, preferable for us in terms of cost of living and access to what we need. Nevertheless, we really have NO IDEA of where will eventually BUY again as we do not yet have the final funds. So, the idea of doing some investigating, via here for our choice of Beach or Bush was born.
Enjoy the pics and the words and see if you can work out what is my preference by the end!
- Literally Back-of-Bourke. 1976-77. Weilmoringle. Dry creek bed/road. My parents, aunt, daughter & hub.
- Yarramalong Valley – west of the Central Coast near Wyong.
- 1976. Post-Floods at Walgett on our way to the coast. Our daughter is by the tree where the top shows how high the water got!
- For around 5 years, each January school holidays in the last 1980s & early 1990s we rented a unit here overlooking The Entrance Beach. Our coastal escape from Western Sydney.
- 1976 – flood aftermath at Weilmoringle. The tractor & trailer belonging the the lessee of the local property was used by him to ‘ferry’ kids from the local camp to our school. Seen in background.
- A relaxed me, at the local Lakes Beach (before cancer made itself known).
- This sign actually points to Violet Downs where we spent the first 2 years of married life with a young child, teaching at small schools nearby.
- Where I long to be again. Still waiting for clearance to go on sand as leg continues to recover.
- The lovely area near Little Wyong Creek.
- My footprints will do this again in 2017.
- Overlooking the water near Norah Head.
- Looking back at the views at one of the northern central coast beaches.
- The contrasts of the vegetation and the ocean. Winter time.
- Driving to Young to see friend one January & totally loving the country-side.
