Self Care. Share Your Story.#2.14/51. #LifeThisWeek. 36/2019.

In the past seven weeks what has been my self care routine?

Pretty much the same each week.

I know though that I need to remember self care before I notice I NEED to do something.

It can be so easy to forget what helps me remain as well as I can emotionally because I can get caught up with achievements, busy-ness and striving.

  • Striving.
  • Achievements
  • Being Busy.

These are words I am deleting as part of my past vocabulary.

I have been a striver, an achiever and a busy person since… 1970!

Just noticing the difference in me has been interesting to say the least!

Here’s what I notice:

  • I am walking more slowly
  • I am noticing more around me
  • I am prepared to actually sit and just enjoy being relaxed
  • I give myself permission to go on social media for a while but to be careful to notice when social media changes me emotionally…then I get off
  • I can actually waste time. Some would be horrified at this but I now know I can!
  • I like to read books and articles I enjoy and sometimes learn more but I can also just ‘chill’ like this
  • I can go outside and notice what is happening in the garden

I am still enjoying my dress with purpose and having a photo taken.

I love going out for a solo coffee still

I do like catching up with people this way too.

  2. Hi Denyse, I’m am driven and a striver and yes I am busy. However, I find that my exercise is my way of reducing stress and is my way of looking after myself. I also love to have a Sunday where I just go with the flow. I usually read or have a facial at home and do things just for myself. I love my life and it is hectic but it mostly is a good stress. Self care is so important and we need to find ways that suit us and take the time to enjoy. We are currently packing up and moving just before Easter and I can tell you my hands need some pampering so I’ll be booking a manicure. Have a great week and thanks for the link up. P.S.     • Thanks Sue for your perspective. I understand that running means much to you and you are indeed so good at it.

      I wondered about your moving house. I did not realise you were needing to move, as I though this was your MIL who had sold. Anyway, whatever it is, moving is a huge stress and I am so glad we have another year in this rental house as we feel we have just settled!!

      I know that busy is good but it can also be masking something in my life and probably I have realised it was me not wanting to slow down and re-connect in a more gentle way with myself. The thing about recovering from cancer is I felt I wanted to do all I could to catch up on what I have missed. Now I am being more measured.

      All about learning more for myself about myself.

  3. My self care is more time noticing things, less time rushing around. More time curling up with a book, less time on social media. More saying no to people/activities that don’t make me happy so I can say yes to the things that do! I love your list especially that you can waste time!

    • I sure do think I needed to slow down but I also still had that nagging voice in my head which has been reduced to a whisper…and I literally can lie in bed of a morning IF I choose to.

      It’s a work in progress, this learning to live well, but it sound as if you are getting quite the handle on it.

  4. I can feel you slowing down Denyse and taking time to notice things around you is a wonderful way to be. I so enjoyed reading of your journey of self care, you articulate it very well! I’m sharing an older post this week, but around an area that we sometimes struggle with, compliments!

    • Thanks Debbie, how interesting that you can notice it. Me too. Ha! I am enjoying the slower pace and give myself permission to do with much of my time as I now please.

      So different from work and family life years!

  5. Self care for me is something I have to do everyday with cancer. I watch a bit of Netflix from the sofa and snuggle under a blanket for a nap. 😀

    • Not a good reason for you to practise self care ….but it sure is essential in keeping you at optimum health for what you manage each day.

    Your hand drawn butterfly made me smile this morning. This is my last Monday at work before holidays and I’m putting one foot in front of the other and just getting on with it.

    I will endeavour to add a few of your tips from this post to my life over the next fortnight. I’ve started on enjoying just being in the back garden. However, next will be just walking MORE SLOWLY.

      Yes, last week before hols is doable but still hard.

      Term One continues in the public school system and an 11 week term is cruel!

      I am glad you can take some of my ideas to help you. I did not realise how fast (for me) I walked until I slowed down. Mmmmm. Amazing!

  7. The noticing things in the garden (or in the street in other people’s gardens) is far more valuable (powerful?) than I ever imagined – I often take photos and it’s just part of the process of ‘really noticing’. Good point!

    • Oh yes, I know noticing has been a real boon for me in terms of enjoying the moments. I have even challenged myself at times not to take the phone and to make a memory instead!

  8. Hi Denyse – I’ve been learning to slow down a bit too since stopping work. It’s really hard to allow yourself the grace of just “being” and not always “doing” isn’t it? I think we often tie our identity in with how busy we are and that’s something that is quite important to recognize and then change. I’m a work in progress but it’s lovely to not be so driven.

    • We sure do tie our identity to employment and roles.

      It has taken me till the past few weeks to realised I CAN slow down, I can sleep in and I can also do mostly what I choose.

      Takes some awareness first and the slowing of my walking really made me think.

      Enjoy your less busy and more ‘you’ time guilt-free!

  9. I really need to slow down and allow myself some time. Work and four kids leaves little time for myself but I know there is time to be found. Thanks for the reminder Denyse.

      I am glad you read this and see that you too need to self care.

      I know some people who carve out chunks of time in the week for work, kids and more, leave a space deliberately for self care.

      My best self care still is getting dressed for the day (after slacking around in the nightie for half the morning) and having a photo and going out for coffee. It literally changes my view each time I do it. Interacting with others helps me too. You would likely want to be left alone!!! One day, I really do want to catch up – out of school hols – and I am keen to see the big shopping centre near you (I think, Greenhills?)

  10. I’m still not doing well on the self-care thing – so much on in the day job. Even on my recent holiday, I was taking phone calls. We are, however, off for 2 whole lovely weeks in 3 weeks time & I’m not taking my computer. My morning walks usually set me up for whatever the day throws at me, but we’ve had so much rain of late I’ve only managed to get out of the house a few days a week. Fingers crossed the rain stays away for a little while now.

    • Oh dear. I do not like that news. I am “glad” I stopped working for NSW DofE before the 24/7 access took hold. I used to get some phone calls from staffing and so on in the school hols but generally I could use them to get over the term before and prepare for the term ahead.

      You really have to ask yourself…anyone does…is “do I really need to call (x) while he/she is away?”. I reckon for some people, it’s a default.

      So, yes, don’t take your computer if that helps but then will that help?

      I have no answer to the aspects of work-related angst I see in you as I was probably like that too. Sigh.

      As for rain, it is good for a bit, then really puts a dampener (pun intended!) on much needed outdoor life.

  11. I’m always pulling myself up for rushing – I tell myself to walk slower, things will still get done and most likely more efficiently because I’m not so wound up and anxious. Walking fast all the time will do that to you I have discovered.

    Quiet alone time is my top shelf, self care nugget of gold. If I don’t have a dose of it in some form for some period of time each day I am one weighed down irritable little munchkin. I am nothing if not a text book introvert! 😉

      I know, people ‘at you’ can drive us mad. I have much more time for me now and appreciate it.

      There were days I did not want to hear “Mum” “Grandma” or “Denyse” depending on what was my role at the time.

      I sure hope you do slow down…I used to think I would “once I was there” and then I asked “what dies there look like” and as I had no answer, I realised I need to do it now!

  12. I’m so glad you are giving yourself permission for a lot of the self-care. The sitting around doing nothing is something I’m still working on! Although, nothing for me might be sitting on the couch and reading but still. Love your art!
