Gratitude. 31/51. #LifeThisWeek. 83/2019.

If you’ve read here for a while, then you will know I have posted about gratitude a few times, there are two here and here.

I truly have to remember gratitude more…especially at times which begin to ensnare themselves into my default negative. So, without further ado is more….

  2. family: our daughter  & her 3 adult kids
  3. us with our daughter (HB to her for tomorrow)
  4. my health professionals keeping me well after head and neck cancer
  5. double shot latte, small: daily treat (and need!)
  6. wed since Jan 1971. love is all we need.

  8. family: our son’s 4 kids.
  9. the ocean. always.

Recently I found this small book at Big W and it has bite-sized very useful sections to read and consider. This from ‘gratitude’

I’ve suffered a great many catastrophes in my life. Most of them never happened. Mark Twain.

The mind is like a torch, shining on either the sorrows or the joys, the problems or solutions in our life. Fortunately we hold the  torch and get to choose where to shine it. Gratitude is not just a state of being. It’s a habit. And like any habit, it requires training. When we train our mind to dwell in gratitude regularly we will also dwell in peace.

 

I do need to express gratitude more regularly but this was a start last week.

 

 

This is my home screen locked. I may not remember to write 3 things I am grateful for but it is a reminder to be grateful.

28 women have shared or are yet to share their stories! How grateful I am for them. Thank you all.

 

Many of us who are bloggers and on social media are always up for a catch-up in real life when possible and on the weekend I was delighted to do this for the third time with the amazing and friendly Sanch who blogs here. Thank you for a great morning!

  1. When I was in Brisbane, I saw some really great street art with the words “gratitude is the attitude.” That kind of sums it up for me! Although I don’t have a formal/written gratitude practice, I practice gratitude every single day because when you stop and look around there really is always something to be grateful for! My gratitude list would look very similar to yours!

      Looking around us giving us the world view instead of the ‘inner’ world is so beneficial.

  5. Thank you for the reminder Denyse. I truly believe that Gratitude is the key to a healthier and happier live in all respects. I had become in the habit of practicing gratitude every day but it has lapsed. My default is to zero in on negatives and things that aren’t so great … so I need to pull my socks up and recalibrate. I need to get gratitude back into my life as a daily habit. I linked up an old post today, from 2016 as part of a series I did. Have a wonderful week! xo

    • You know Min, that our brains are calibrated towards the default negative and it is for our own good. In other words, keeps us from danger.

      However, when you notice you are getting too much of it then you can (as I have learned over and over again) change it with just some looking at nature – as you do and taking in the good. Dr Rick Hanson writes of taking in the good if you are looking to learn more.

  6. Fabulous collage depicting Gratitude Denyse! You are very clever 🙂 I like to stop and think about what I’m grateful for as it’s always good for the soul. I’m so happy to see you met up with Sanch too. Lovely post that spells it all out!

    • Thanks Deb. I have quite a few apps and as they are on my phone they make collages appear fun and easy.

      It is a mindset to remember gratitude even when you are in the midst of blah times isn’t it?

  7. I’m so glad you got to meet up with Sanch again! Gratitude is so important. I’m grateful today that I’m home for my girls who needed a day off school today x

      Glad you could find the gratitude to be home for your girls. It was always so hard having the decide what to do with sick kids when working away from home.

  9. Hi Denyse, you’re so right about the importance of choosing what we focus our attention on. I’m finding that the more I turn my mind away from worry and chewing over things that may never happen (loved the Mark Twain quote) the more I have time to focus on what I’m grateful for. Life is pretty darn good and our attitude makes a big difference to what comes our way.
    Loved that you caught up with Sanch too – nothing like spending time with a fellow blogger x

    • Thank you Leanne. Today I used mindfulness in the prosthodontist’s chair and ‘took myself on one of my walks’ when he was up close and very personal in my mouth.

      The more I can do to be present rather than be concerned about the ‘what ifs’ means I am more relaxed and content. A nicer me too!

  10. I don’t know how people live away from the beach. Not sure I could do it. Get on the bridge home across the ocean and it’s a mental relaxation point.

    • I lived away from the beach for over 40 years. However, there were places of nature for me to enjoy too. I do get exactly what you mean about how you feel once you are on the bridge.

      I feel a lot like that as I leave Sydney now!! Can’t wait to be where there is more nature and space around me.

  11. Thank you for this opportunity to reflect on my life this week with gratitude. I am so grateful for my family and this country we call home. That’s what it all boils down to in the end.

    • Thanks so much SSG. I am listening to Fall and Rise story of 9/11 and what is an important takeaway for me, is hearing what the last words were from each person who got to speak to a loved one.

      They all said “I love you.”

      It comes down to that. Such a powerful message within a very confronting book.

  14. We talked about this the other day and I truly believe by practising it, we begin to change our mindset. It doesn’t mean bad things don’t get to us but it definitely helps put it in perspective. Also, your phone takes better photos than mine!! 😀 We both had the same photo that day and yours looks much better! Hope you have a wonderful week Denyse!

    • Time for a new phone?? I did enjoy our catch up and yes, feeling the gratitude can change so much.
